The intellectual property rights management group guides the scientists, technical officers, and students on all intellectual property related matters. The group helps innovators to protect their innovations through various forms of intellectual property rights viz. patents, trademarks, designs, copyrights etc. The group works towards providing prior art search reports, and helping to understand and interpret techno-legal documents to encourage innovation and creativity among the researchers. The group also deals with intellectual property management, including the annual review of IP portfolios regarding renewals and coordination of intellectual property filing and its  prosecution with CSIR-IPU.

CSIR-NPL currently has 38 active Indian and 21 active foreign granted patents. In addition, CSIR-NPL has 23 patent applications filed in India and 3 foreign patent applications..
