Fluid Flow Measurement Standard

The Fluid Flow Measurement Standard group of NPLI has Water Meter Testing and Calibration Facilities. The group has Testing Facility upto 50 mm and Calibration Facility upto 200 mm. Presently, the group is providing testing services of the water flow meters as per IS 779, IS 6784 and ISO 4064 to the various user organizations traceable to the ‘National Standard'. The upgradation of old Calibration Facility using state-of-the-art instrumentation and control has been planned to make it comparable to advanced NMIs and provide traceable measurements to Indian users.

As a follow up of the upgradation, a new prototype automatic Water Flow Calibration Standard (i.e. primary standard) of size DN100 was designed and developed. The different parts of this prototype system i.e. weighing tanks, load cells, flow control valves, drain valves, flowmeters, On/Off valves, diverter, fishtail, pneumatic pipes, pressure regulator devices, pressure gauges, temperature sensors etc. were installed and integrated. The various devices like diverter, drain valves, load cell indicators, digital multimeter, NI counter card and universal counter were automated in LabVIEW software. Traceability of the system was established. The expanded uncertainty of the system at 2000 kg collection mass is 0.03% at k =2. Figure 1 shows the photographs of different parts of this system.

The Gas Flow Calibration System has been established in the flow range 10 sccm (standard cubic centimeter per minute) to 1000 slm (standard litre per minute) with expanded uncertainty of 0.2% at k =2. This system is ready for calibration of mass flow controllers, mass flow meters, rotameters, totalizer type meters etc. The system supports multi-gas calibration. Figure 2 shows the photograph of this new system.
